Shamakhi
The ancient town of Shemakha is located at the foothills of the Big Caucuses Mountains Chain, 120 kilometers to the North-West of Baku. The general elevation of Shemakha is 800 meters over the sea level.
Despite numerous earthquakes a lot of historic monuments have been preserved in Shemakha up today. Juma-Mosque (Cathedral Friday Mosque) of the 10-11th centuries, ' Yeddi Gumbez ('Seven Domes'') Funeral mausoleum (18-19th centuries), 'Diri-Baba' Mausoleum built in 1402, ruins of Gulistan Citadel of the 11-12th centuries prove that. And this list of historic landmarks of Shemakha can be continued. For a long period Shemakha was one of the basic points of the Great Silk Route.
In the meantime Shemakha is known as the home town of many great Azery philosophers, poets, architects and thinkers, such as Hagani (the 12th century), Nasimi (the 14th century), M.A.Sabir (1862-1911) and many others.
Mild climate of this temperate zone, rich soil, abundant forests, alpine meadows are typical features of this part of Azerbaijan. The population of this district is basically dealing with viticulture, wine-growing and wine-making (Shemakha is famous for excellent wines produced both in wineries and privately at homes), cultivation of fruit and vegetables, cattle-breeding and carpet weaving.
Ismailly town is one of the largest agricultural centers of Shemakha District. The village of Lagich situated not far from Shemakha is traditionally famous as the center of crafts, such as copper utensils, leather goods, carpets and so on.
The biggest Astrophysical Observatory not only in Azerbaijan but the Caucuses as well, is located in a mountainous settlement. The latest estimated date of foundation of the city is the 6-th century A.D. For a long period in the past Shemakha used to be the capital of a very strong and influential Azeri kingdom named  Shirvan Khanlygh. However the town itself was subject to very destructive earthquakes, the most memorable of which took place in 1902.ent of Pirkuli, Shemakha District.
