Guba
The city is located in the pictorial corner of Azerbaijan – in the north-eastern slopes of Shahdag ridge, at 600 m height above sea. The town of Cuba is situated 170 kilometers of the North from Baku. Unique beauty of mountains was immortalized by poets. Hundreds of peaks and mountain gorges, rocks of strange form, pure springs, never-ending  mountains as well as rich flora and fauna create a wonderful landscape, which could hardly be found in any other area of Caucasus. There are several big mountains in Guba region but climbing is recommended only with experienced mountaineers and appropriate equipment. Majestic Shahdag, covered with everlasting snows and glaciers and surrounded with clouds, may be viewed almost from all the points of the region. The height of the mountain is 4243 m. The fertile fields, green forests, villages and comfortable recreational centers, impressing with their beauty are stretched out at its foothill.
Guba first of all is the «capital of apples» in Azerbaijan. Besides apples, pears, apricots, cherries, sweet-cherries and plums are also grown here. 88 types of apples, 12 types of pears and 35 types of plums, various types of apricots, peaches, cherries and sweet-cherries are gown in the region.
Guba  carpets, known  by their artistic performance are very popular outside of Azerbaijan and decorate the expositions of many famous museums and private collections. Weaved in 1772, the carpet «Goldu Chichi» is now in the well-known New York museum «Metropolitan» and is considered to be one of its pearls.
In ancient times, Albanian tribes were living on this land. One of them, Khynalyg, the ethnic group with a total population of more than 1000 people, lived in the Khynalyg settlement, located in the area of Alpine meadows. Khynalyg people have their own culture, language,  traditions and ceremonies.
Shortly about etymology of «Guba». In some resources it is fixed like «Gubbe», which  means «Cupola». Historians state that formerly there was an observation tower. According to most of sources, Guba in ancient times was called «Kudial» – according to the name of the river, dividing the city into two parts. However, according to the opinion of some scientists, more reliable opinion is that «Guba» originates from the name of the tribe that lived in that area.
The city was founded in 1744 like a residence of the ruler of one of the most wide state formations of XVIII century Azerbaijan , Guba khanate, which in 1806  entered the Russian Empire.
Guba was visited by famous French writer Alexander Dumas-father, the outstanding orientalist I.N.Berezin, Russian writer Bestuzhev-Marlinskiy, Australian traveller A.Omariya, famous Norwegian scientist-traveller Tur Heyerdal and others.
The great Azerbaijan writer-historian Abbaskuli Aga Bakikhanov was living here for a long period.
In the city and its outskirts there are many historical monuments: fire worshipers tower in the Khynalyg settlement, Juma-mosque (XIX), mosques Sakina khanym and Ardebil (XIX), bath-house with the form of cupola in Guba (XIX), octagonal mausoleum in Agbil settlement (XVI), Tengialty fortress and etc.
