Geography

Azerbaijan Republic is located between Europe and Asia, on the Southern Caucasus. In the North and North-West of the country there are the Caucasian Mountains and in the south the Talish (Girkan ) mountains. In the East the Republic is surrounded by the Caspian Sea. Area of the republic is 86, 6 squire km.

The Azerbaijan Republic is the largest state on the Caucasus. In the North Azerbaijan borders on the Russian Federation, in the north-west Georgia, in the south-west Armenia and Turkey, in the south Iran. Eastern frontiers are washed by the Caspian Sea.

Relief: There are 4 main parts in the relief of Azerbaijan: Big Caucasus (part of the Main Caucasian Chain), Small Caucasian Chain, Nakhchivan and Kura- Araks Lowland the Talish mountains and Lenkoran Lowland.

Climate: Despite small territory Azerbaijan has unique nature and climate. Out of 11 climatic areas of our planet 9 are available on the territory of Azerbaijan: ranging from subtropics to Alpine meadows. Average annual temperature - +13.7 ºC, average January temperature - +1.7ºC, average July temperature - +27.9ºC.

Rivers and lakes: There are more than 1000 rivers in the country. Kura is the largest river. Azerbaijan is famous for its numerous mineral waters. The most famous of them are Istisu, Turshusu, Badamli. There are no large sweet lakes in Azerbaijan, however there are   a lot of small lakes (up to 250).

Plants: There are more than 4200 plants on the territory of the Republic. Some of them are found nowhere in the world but here: Eldar pine, silk acacia, iron tree.  Mountain forests are perfect place for rest and tourism.

Animals: Azerbaijan has a diverse fauna. More than 12000 species of animals and birds live here such as bears, Caucasian goats, wild boars, wolfs, foxes, jeyrans, hares, etc. There is a great diversity of birds too. Throughout the year   more than 250 species of birds stay in Kizil Agach reserve.
